Supernatural "Bad Boys": Dean's Past and Ghosts

You know I kinda miss the good old days of Supernatural with a good old ghost hunt, and Bad Boys reminded me of it. Sure I'm a fan of the main arc, but we have been dealing with the whole Dean is lying to Sam drama long enough to enjoy some good old fashioned Supernatural back when they were just hunting ghosts and such. Not to mention Bad Boys gave us a little insight into more of Dean's past. If you think about it, we know more about Sam than Dean and Bad Boys gives us an insight on Dean. I really didn't about it until I read a comment somewhere about how Dean sacrifices a lot for Sam and how devoted Dean is to Sam. Makes me wish I kinda had a sibling like that. Oh you Winchesters. This is one filler episode that isn't a waste of time as we saw Dean have a bit of normalcy in his life and another woman in his long line of women he has met in the past.

So this week Bad Boys starts off at the boys home as the boys are playing hide and seek when the overseer (I don't remember what his official title was) walks in yelling at them for playing in the barn and being out past curfew. Then it suddenly gets cold (geez I wonder what that could be) and the tractor comes to life and impales the guy, killing him. At the bunker, Sam is looking for Dean when Dean's phone rings and he picks it up. Dean arrives and grabs the phone from Sam and hears about the haunting at the boys home he stayed at for 2 months. So they head over where they meet Sonny who tells them about the recent murder and strange things that have been happening. Things moving, and lights flickering, classic ghost haunting signs. So Dean goes to the barn and Sam investigates the boys room where he finds Dean's old bed and talks to Ruth, who is praying for the ghost to leave. At the barn Dean stop some boys from bullying a boy named Timmy who was there when the man was killed and how the temperature dropped. In the house Ruth tells Sam the story of Howard Wasserlaufand how he murdered his wife after he thought she was cheating on him. So the boys head out to salt and burn the bones, but that is not the end of it.

Bad Boys was Supernatural's answer to all the dark stuff the boys have been dealing with. So for one week, no Castiel, no lying to Sam, and all the other crap they deal with. Bad Boys took us back to the early days of Supernatural with flashbacks and some good old hunts. I can't believe I actually missed ghosts hunts, but memories man. I think the main point of Bad Boys though was the devotion Dean has to his brother and what he has given up for that. You know, just in case you didn't get the first few times. We know Dean does a lot for Sam and Sam is basically like the center of Dean's universe. I guess this links back to Season 2 where Dean is at John's grave asking why they have to give up their happiness for the world. Dean choose his duty and Sam over a happy life in order to help people. This could explain why Dean allowed Sam to be possessed by Zeke. He took on the guilt and the unhappiness that came with it in order for Sam to live. Oh Dean, my wounded hero. Anyone notice music actually being played this week (Stone in Love by Journey)? It has been awhile right? Last song played was back in Slumber Party. Writers, rock music is a part of what makes Supernatural a great show. It's embedded into the mythology like angels and demons are.

So there is kinda a few things I want to pick at about Bad Boys that I had issues with. Probably stupid, but I'm gonna bring it up anyways. So um, does Dean have a woman in like every town he visited? He had that girl back in season 1, and then Lisa and now this new one. Each one Dean had a bond with and a heart connection with. Does this mean Dean is never meant to find the one for him? I'm sorry Dean fans. In recent years I feel like Supernatural has been painting John Winchester as a complete douchebag. Or an irresponsible parent. Well I guess he is since hunting was the thing he really cared about, in addition to keeping his kids alive no matter what. Bad Boys doesn't help his image. Like Dean, I hope there is more to John Winchester than his lack of child care, and I would like to keep his memory as we last saw him back in season 2 finale. My most important issue with Bad Boys is that it really doesn't add anything rememberable to Supernatural. Sure we learned how much Dean devotes himself to Sam, but is there any quotes and moments that are going to stand out from the rest? Think about it.

Thank you Supernatural for giving us a good old ghost hunt this week on Bad Boys. It was a nice transition from the main arc to this filler episode too. Did you guys see the EMF meter? Man it has been a while since I saw that. Guys we also need to talk about Dean's nickname D-Dog. Also where did it come from? It was adorable seeing Sam finding Dean's old bed. I'm sorry I don't have much to say about Bad Boys, I just happened to watch Person of Interest's The Crossing on that night as well and it ruined me. Seriously, compared to The Crossing, Bad Boys was lukewarm. Don't worry Supernatural, you're still my favorite and you can make it up to me. See you all next week.

What is your opinion on John Winchester? What do you think of Dean's time in the boys home?
