How often is it that we can watch a television show without any commercials breaks? How often does it happen with your favorite show? How often does it air at the same time globally? Never, but if Doctor Who is good at anything, it is making the impossible happen. We all knew Day of the Doctor was going to be a big thing filled with laughs, feels, and moments that were just so awesome. In a way, Day of the Doctor served as a tie in for the Doctor's history and all the doctors themselves' together. In addition to giving us more questions than answers (damn you Moffat). But hey, it's Doctor Who, we are used to that. Right? Now I have to warn you, I am new to the Doctor Who fandom and did not watch the older series for personal reasons so I might have missed some references in Day of the Doctor. So I do apologize, but I did catch the newer references so go me. I feel like I'm just rambling here, but that is what Doctor Who did to me, it destroyed how I can think. Although did any of you check out Adventures in Space and Time? That was a cute little reenactment of how Doctor Who came to be.
So I'm going to attempt to summarize slight and spoiler free what happened in Day of the Doctor. Wouldn't surprise me if I forgot something here and there because there was just so much information crammed into that episode. It began with Clara teaching a class when she gets word from the office that the Doctor wants to meet her somewhere. When she finally gets to the Tardis and meets with the Doctor again, UNIT decides to pick up the TARDIS since they need the Doctor's help. Upon arrival they take the Doctor to show him Queen Elizabeth's creditals, which is a painting of the final days of Gallifrey. Back in time during the war, John Hunt's doctor takes action and takes a deadly weapon from the weapon area that is forbidden. The twist with the weapon however, is that it has a consonance. Back in present time, the Doctor heads down to the underground gallery where they discover all the paintings were broken from the inside. Elsewhere, David Tennant's Doctor is having a picnic with Queen Elizabeth to figure out if shes a Zygon or not and when the Zygons appears and chases them into the forest. This is when all three Doctors see the rift in time, and the current Doctor jumps through it to where the tenth is, soon followed by John Hurt's Doctor. They are captured and taken to the tower. Clara soon arrives with of the Zygons getting into the black vault. It's up to the Doctors to get back in order to stop another possible world war.
If you didn't catch it before, Day of the Doctor was a one of a kind tv event that fulfilled all expectations. It was full of adventure, feels, laughs, and things that make it Doctor Who. Not to mention Matt Smith, David Tennant, and John Hurt are all awesome. Matt Smith is my Doctor, but I do like David Tennant's doctor (hes my second favorite). I loved when he invented something that goes ding when theres stuff, in addition to him trying to figure out whose a Zygon. My personal favorite is the rabbit. It was also funny to see all the doctors making fun of each other (sand shoes, chinny, and grandfather). Underneath all that there is that dark side to the Doctor he carries around due to John Hurt's doctor's future actions. The man who under all that, shaped by these actions. Did you all catch a glimpse of the 12th doctor? What was the most important thing I feel about Day of the Doctor is how it connected all the previous Doctor and companions together. Whether it was just pictures or references, or a scientist wearing a certain scarf. Or having old footage of the previous doctors and a surprise cameo. Hey, it's Doctor Who, expect the unexpected. Some of the best lines from Day of the Doctor were from John Hurt's Doctor with, "Why are you pointing you screwdrivers like that? They're scientific instruments, not water pistols!" Then we get a River Song like quote with, "They're screwdrivers! What are you going to do? Assemble a cabinet out of them?" Oh there is just so much more I could talk about, but that would kinda ruin it wouldn't it?
Now my issues with Day of the Doctor is mainly the many questions I have now after watching it. Like how did all the doctors know to show up? How did the time lords come through during The End of Time? Was that before or after the Day of the Doctor? How does that surprise cameo play out? How is it possible for the Doctors to interact without causing a paradox or the world ending? Does Doctor Who seriously expect me to believe it's alright as long as the previous incarnations doesn't remember? Why wasn't Captain Jack Harkness there? No seriously, it would have been awesome to see him again. Also, how did the TARDIS thing work out? Did it like converge on these other? So many questions. Thanks Moffat. Honestly though, I can't find anything bad with Day of the Doctor other than the confusion it caused me. That and a production error of the Doctor forgetting to close the Tardis door.
Happy 50 years Doctor Who! What better to celebrate it than with Day of the Doctor, a record breaking episode (no seriously they got some world records with it). Even though we got more questions than the ones there were actually answered. I was surprised that John Hurt's Doctor wasn't as dark as I thought he would be. Never expect the expected from Steven Moffat. What was really cool though about Day of the Doctor was that it set Doctor Who another goal to strive towards. Another goal for the Doctor to move towards. Just realized that is this Matt Smith's second last appearance as the Doctor since he will be bowing out as the Doctor this coming Christmas special. They released a little teaser for the Christmas special after Day of the Doctor (watch it here). See you guys around Christmas time and Happy Holidays!
What did you think of Day of the Doctor? What was your favorite moment/quote? Who do you think should have been in the special?
