You know, if I didn't love Ichabod before, I certainly do now. Sanctuary was a fantastic episode for Sleepy Hollow as we learned a bit more about Ichabod and Katrina and secret not even Ichabod knew. Usually I can't stand episodes that incorporate thanksgiving plot line (see Batb's Guess Whos Coming To Dinner), Sleepy Hollow used the idea of Thanksgiving in it's plot in a way that wasn't annoying, but acceptable. Not to mention Sleepy Hollow's first haunted house with ties to Ichabod's past. We got a little information on Captain Irving this week by meeting his daughter and ex-wife and the implication of something happening in Irving's past. Although I can say now that I'm on board with the Irving/Jenny ship. I can see it happening. Last week guys I posted a poll to name our little group other than calling it Team Free Will (that is Dean, Sam, Castiel and Bobby from Supernatural) and the winner is Team Witness, so from now on I'm going to call our little gang Team Witness.
So Sanctuary starts off with our case of the week when a socialite, Lena Gilbert, comes to Sleepy Hollow to restore her ancestral home. Despite the spooky look and her bodyguard's warnings, Lena runs into the house only to awaken a evil force laying dormant. A few days later, Ichabod and Abbie walk into the station talking about Thanksgiving and obviously Ichabod has some issues since everyone he knew is dead or trapped in Purgatory. Irving calls the duo in about the missing socialite, and shows them a note that has Katrina's name on it circled. With some research on the magical internet, they learn that Lena is a decedent of Lachlan Fredericks, a man Ichabod and Katrina once visited. When our duo visits the house, they soon find themselves trapped inside and unable to contact for help. Abbie does begin seeing a ghost of a black woman in a white Colonial dress walking around and talking to her. They soon find Lena, trapped in a closet by vines and freeing awakens the scarecrow. The gang needs to find a way out of the house while avoiding the scarecrow hunting for them.
Much as Sanctuary a filler episode from the main story line if Sleepy Hollow, it really was a breath of fresh air from all the drama. Well just a little bit since Sleepy Hollow delved into Katrina's past and the secret she kept from Ichabod. I really like how Sleepy Hollow didn't depend on the Thanksgiving plot to sell Sanctuary, but rather used it to sell the idea of holding on the moment and finding family and friends. Like Ichabod being thrown out of his time and having nothing really to celebrate, but Abbie points out that he needs to find something to hold onto and be thankful for that. Then they drink his favorite rum. Now that friendship is beautiful. Also with Irving and Jenny, there is literacy sparks flying their eyes looking at each other. One is the law, and the other law bender. It also helps they have fantastic chemistry that is comparable to Ichabod and Abbie (friendship wise people). Also love the little tease into Irving past, and I'm a bit curious about that. Now we need to seriously need to talk about that haunted house and how spooky it was. This was thanks to excellent use of shaky cam and dismal lighting. That freaking scarecrow was just creepy and awesome as well. Which make it even more awesome when Ichabod fought against the scarecrow with a freaking axe. Yes, embrace the rage.
Now this is part of the review where I take a look at what was not so hot about Sanctuary. Much as I love the whole Irving and Jenny thing, this was where Sanctuary was a bit slow verses it's haunted house storyline. The same can be said for the little nudge with Irving's background as it was a little hint, but not enough to get me excited verses the Ichabod/Katrina storyline. Also Sleepy Hollow, why did Jenny even appear this week? Don't get me wrong, I love her, but she had no real purpose to be there other than flirting with Irving and didn't help drive the story along other than Thanksgiving dinner. There was also no mention of the previous episodes either, making Sanctuary a stand alone episode. The whole secret Katrina was keeping is something I'm not sure is a pro or con storyline or personal wise.
Sanctuary really did help develop Team Witness' relationship and the histories behind each one. Too bad Sleepy Hollow is going on hiatus for two weeks again (at least it wasn't as long as the last one). Loved the haunted house and the scarecrow though. I love how that even filler episodes of Sleepy Hollow are decent and fit in somehow. They are not out of place within the whole arc. Some serious props to Tom Mison this week and his acting skills, cause Ichabod was just fantastic. Even though McDonalds confuses him. Don't worry Ichabod, the food itself is confusing and questionable. Tumblr has pointed out though that Ichabod does this hand thing and I wonder if it's on purpose or in character? See you Sleepy Heads in two weeks.
What did you think of Sanctuary? Do you ship Irving/Jenny? Have you noticed the hand thing?
