Sleepy Hollow "The Lesser Key of Solomon": Ichabod and the Mills Sisters

After the first three episodes, it looks like the training wheels are off with The Lesser Key of Solomon. This week Sleepy Hollow taps into it's mythology as it pushes aside the case of the week formula for the season arc instead. In a way, the first three first were set so we could get comfortable with the characters and understand them. With The Lesser Key of Solomon, Sleepy Hollow gives evil a face (sorry the headless horseman and John Cho are still at an evil convention) and the characters a taste of what they were up against. So there was no need for side plots as the main storyline stood front stage as Ichabod and the Mills sisters face the forces of evil. Well a sleeper cell of it anyway. The thing is with Sleepy Hollow, once you get into it, theres no getting out. Both for the characters and for the audience.

The Lesser Key of Solomon starts off in a flashback of Ichabod in what history knows as the Boston Tea Party. This slides into Ichabod telling his love story of him and his wife, Katria, which at first I thought was going to be a cheesy opening. It was later revealed that Ichabod was telling his story to the NorthStar lady and reassuring her that her husband still loved her. Oh Ichabod, you big stuffie. Anyways, Abbie comes out from the mental hospital informing Ichabod that Jenny has escaped. At the station, Abbie asks Captain Irving for some time to find Jenny because pasting her face every where. Irving agrees and give Abbie 12 hours to find Jenny. Elsewhere, the bad guys (I can't remember the group name sorry) begin to move and start their search for Jenny Mills. Back with our heroes, Ichabod and Abbie get a lead on where Jenny might be and head out to a cabin near a lake. They soon discover that the cabin used to belong to the late Sheriff and used to know Jenny. Jenny appears and the sisters fight until Ichabod intervenes. They soon discover what Jenny was up to and the enemy moves in to take what Jenny was entrusted to protect.

Jumping into the main arc of a season is always rewarding as they are usually interesting to watch and The Lesser Key of Solomon took a good step forward. If Sleepy Hollow was just about the horseman, it wouldn't be interesting at all. When I first saw the trailer for Sleepy Hollow, I could feel the mythology behind it and that it was going to be so much more. The Lesser Key of Solomon was the first real take at the mythology behind everything. It was more than undead witches, and dream monsters. Which is one of the reasons I enjoy watching Sleepy Hollow other than Ichabod (although its a plus he is easy on the eyes). Sleepy Hollow even shows this balance with the Mills sisters on both end on the scale. One, Jenny, accepted everything she saw and believed and took action. The other, Abbie, didn't outright believe what she saw, and tried to use logic to justify what happened. It is like the two sides of Sleepy Hollow. It was amusing to see Ichabod having to deal with the two sisters and put a stop to their bickering. Also was funny how Abbie summed everything in 5 seconds. It's a gift I think that all fans wished they had when explaining a show to someone else. We just want to explain everything cause it's awesome. The best scene of the night has to go to Ichabod and the NorthStar lady, with their little heart to heart. Oh Ichabod how I love you so.

Now there was very little about The Lesser Key of Solomon that was an issue. The one thing I did not like though was the camera style, or lens that was used in the beginning flashback that opened the episode. Was there a reason for it? I personally don't feel that look was appropriate for the scene and a normal shot with some effects (video editing junkie here) would have had given the feeling that it was a flashback if the period clothing wasn't a big enough clue. What they used wasn't very clear and distracting. Luckily, they fixed this error later on in the next flashback. For those of you looking for the horseman or John Cho, once again, they didn't appear this week. Sorry.

Well this was a good week of Sleepy Hollow with The Lesser Key of Solomon. We got to learn more about the Mills sisters and see them finally forgive each other. We also learned that Jenny Mills is basically a bad ass. There was unfortunately no Ichabod vs. modern day this week, but we got to see Ichabod's shooting pose, which very much suited him. You'll know it when you see it. We learned of the season's big bad that Ichabod and Abbie will have to take on. Yup, The Lesser Key of Solomon was a big episode and important stepping stone. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take a look at all the gifs from the episode. See you next week.

What did you think of The Lesser Key of Solomon? What did you think of Jenny Mills? Can you describe Sleepy Hollow in 5 seconds?
