Sleepy Hollow "John Doe": The Beauty of Teamwork

Wasn't John Doe such a juicy episode of Sleepy Hollow? I really love how Sleepy Hollow has woven this world around it's two main characters of Abbie and Ichabod, and how their partnership defines the show. If you look into any good television show, you would see that a strong partnership with excellent chemistry goes a long way and tends to have the loudest fanbase. An excellent example (and my personal favorite), the Supernatural fandom and the relationship between the brothers. Not only does Sleepy Hollow have this chemistry, but it has a great premise and mythology behind it to back it up. This week's case was a example of this with a sudden outbreak of an illness with black vein thingys. If you are a Supernatural fan, you have an idea by now which horseman creature caused this.

John Doe begins in the woods with a young girl picking flowers in the woods and coaxing a young boy to play with her. No seriously, they were playing tag you dirty people. Soon the boy finds himself chased by a man on a horse and soon out in the middle of the road. Elsewhere, Ichabod and Abbie return to Carbin's cabin where Ichabod has decided to stay rather than the motel. Ichabod claims to feel more at home here than elsewhere. He also considers some changes to fit in (not the beard and hair please). Then Abbie gets a call about a strange boy collapsing somewhere. Upon the scene, Abbie gets the report of what happened and this is when the boy wakes up and begins speaking middle English (no not middle earth) which Ichabod can speak. Oh and yes, Ichabod is basically perfect. They soon discover that the boy is infected and cannot be found in any missing child database. Ichabod informs Abbie that the boy could have come from the first village settled by the British that went missing years ago. Abbie shoots this down, but then the EMT who helped the boy falls ill and the duo begins looking for answers by retracing Thomas's steps.

You have to love it when a tv show knows how to play it's strengths and John Doe really showed us this week a little bit of both, but more on chemistry. When I say chemistry, I mean how our two main characters connect with each other and how natural it is. I love the partnership between Ichabod and Abbie and how well they work together. Each of them bring something to the partnership that makes them work so well. Which it was so strong when Abbie was distressed for Ichabod when he fell ill. She didn't know what to do, and was on her own since usually Ichabod helped her out. Then she figured something out and went with it and made me cheer for her. If I had to choose my favorite female character, it would be Abbie Mills. What was good, but I wasn't happy about, was the storyline with Abbie's ex looking into Ichabod. In a way, he represents the saner part of TV with the whole not believing Ichabod's story about being an Oxford professor and why exactly Ichabod was working with the police department. We, on the other side, we just believe what we're told and go along for the ride (which is not wrong). Looking forward to seeing how that plays out. Although we did learn there is something else at play here with LINE OF SPOILERS. Finally, we got to learn a bit more about where Katrina is trapped, which is apparently SPOILER. Oh how I love those two crazy kids (Ichabod and Katrina for those who are confused).

Now let's not let how pretty Ichabod was this week blind us, cause there are some things about John Doe that need addressing. Mythology wise, it did take a step back this week, but not too much as another horseman was introduced (and he had a head). I think we all knew which horseman it was and that it was a horseman. If this was supposed to be a secret, it was terrible hidden. Also, if you're a Supernatural fan and you see a illness plus a horseman, you know what it is. Are the writers of Sleepy Hollow fans of Supernatural? I'm not complaining since Supernatural is awesome. How many of you thought it was weird that this middle English thing was brought in? How many of you knew there was a middle English? I didn't know, and I think it was a convenient plot point to need Ichabod's help. They could have used some English accents right? Sorry middle English just makes my brain connect to Middle Earth. As for a continuity error, did anyone notice how Ichabod's wet hair became suddenly dry? Opps.

I think at this point, I am becoming slightly biased with Sleepy Hollow as I am just going along for the ride. John Doe showed us the strength of Abbie and Ichabod's partnership and how well works. The answer is no though. I do not ship them. Strong of shipper as I am, I like the friendship between the two and would like it to stay that way. No need to complicate it right? For this week's winner of Ichabod verses modern day is Ichabod verses plastic. Watching Ichabod trying to open that package was quite funny, although that type of plastic is hard to open. I feel your pain Ichabod! In case you guys didn't know, Sleepy Hollow is going on a three week hiatus but will return with the headless horseman and John Cho. See you all in three weeks.

What did you think of this week's case? Whats your opinion of Ichabod and Abbie's partnership?
