Supernatural 'We Need To Talk About Kevin': Winchesters Reunited and Matured

Supernatural is finally back! After months of emptiness that Supernatural left when it was on hiatus, it was finally filled when Supernatural returned with We Need To Talk About Kevin. Supernatural proved once again that it can still bring something new to the table. This is credit to new showrunner Jeremy Carver, who returned back to Supernatural this year. Not new to Supernatural, Carver takes up the reigns from Sera Gamble for the eighth season of Supernatural. I look forward to the season that he plans to bring us.

As many fans remember, at the end of season 7, Dean was sent Purgatory and Sam soon find himself utterly alone for the first time. Season 8 kicks off a year later with Dean just escaping from Purgatory, and Sam has settled down for a normal life. The brothers soon find themselves reunited at Rufus' cabin as Dean tackles a startled Sam. Dean soon runs through all the tests a hunter could possibly know, and tells Sam to test him. Sam refuses, due to he knows Dean is Dean, and this leads to a humor scene of Dean doing the tests to himself.

Once that is done, Sam and Dean hug (and make another memory for fans), and Dean reveals to Sam that he was in Purgatory for the whole year. Sam is shocked to hear this, and then proceeds to inform Dean that he got out of the life. This scene sets the tone for the rest of the episode as Dean is just shocked that his brother didn't even look for him. Even more that he actually kept the promise they usually break for each, as Dean puts it, "our undying love for each other". Could be misquoting it though. Despite Dean's anger at Sam for abandoning the search for him, they put their problems aside to help Kevin who has managed to escape Crowley. The Winchesters manage to track Kevin down to an abandoned building, and Kevin tells them about his escape from Crowley and how he discovered a way to close the gate of hell forever.

We Need To Talk About Kevin had the challenge of having to bring something new to the table that wouldn't be similar to premieres like season 3 and 4. Luckily, We Need To Talk About Kevin didn't have to struggle with this challenge as it wove an excellent episode to open the season with. We saw changes in all the characters as they all had changed within the year time frame. Like Kevin for instance, he never wanted to be a prophet, but is forced to live like a hunter. I am glad to see Kevin again, and I have a feeling that he is going to become one of the people Sam and Dean can trust. Supernatural is slowly building up the Winchester's world up once again with allies. We Need To Talk About Kevin even brought humor to the plate with scenes like Kevin telling his girlfriend she's possessed by a demon and going to her safety school. Gotta love how that she is more pissed that shes going to her safety school more than being possessed. It didn't hurt also that the sideburns (you know what I'm talking about) have been reduced back on Sam's face.

The main attraction of We Need To Talk About Kevin, was how the relationship of Sam and Dean was affected by the changes that both men have faced in their time apart. Dean essentially became a warrior in his year in Purgatory, while Sam retired and lived a normal life. The results, Dean is more committed to the fight and Sam sees an end for the battle that is coming. Dean is not happy though that Sam didn't look for him, and left the hunter lifestyle behind completely. In doing this, Sam had abandoned Kevin who relentlessly called Sam for help. Sam does not abandoned Dean though, and agrees to help Dean find Kevin. A touching moment comes though when Sam gets Dean a burger and Dean is clearly touched by this gesture. A future problem will come though between the brothers as the brothers are keeping something back from each other. Specifically Dean and his relationship with the vampire Benny.

Now We Need To Talk About Kevin was not prefect as there were some flaws. For those viewers who were more into the hunt and action, you were not in luck as this episode focused more on the brothers than setting out to gank some monsters. I also felt that the Winchester gave up a bit easily when Crowley came for Kevin. Usually they go all out against their foes, but let Crowley get away with almost grabbing Kevin again. Another scene that caught my attention was the one where Sam brings the dog to the animal hospital, and it felt like they were really trying to create a really heartbroken Sam that the scene just turned awkward. Not saying that Jared Padalecki isn't a great actor, but the scene didn't suit his character. Last but not least, the episode was too damn short.

We Need To Talk To About Kevin kicks off the season nicely as it sets up the arc for the season. In addition to making fans crave the next episode. I know I certainly am since this episode felt like it just ran out of time. Good luck to new showrunner Jeremy Carver and his new season of Supernatural, and to many more. The title card was pretty cool too. Next week, What's Up Tiger Mommy? airs as the Winchesters and Kevin find yet another word of god.
