John Carter, Mars wants you back

Yet another ambitious film, but wasn't a surprise hit for the movie hiatus. Although if you are looking for a movie to entertain you, John Carter will do the trick. For those like me suffering from movie madness (you know when you begin itching for a movie), John Carter is a movie you should look into. Although I would consider it a wait till Dvd movie. John Carter did have its moments that stood out from the rest.

So the basic story of John Carter is basically about a man from the 1800's who transported to Mars. There has been many stories where the main character has been forced to adapt to a new world, different from his own. This story is no different, but has a some holes in it here and here. The character John Carter, a rouge army captain who has kinda given up on everything due to the loss of his wife and daughter. John is eventually found by his commanding officer who attempts to drag John back. John does escape, but during his escape he miss this medallion. With saying the proper words, John is sent to Mars.

On Mars, John discovers that he is stronger than normal and can jump very high. Not to mention he is stronger than normal. No he doesn't have super powers, its the atmosphere. Mars' gavity is less than earth's. So with some science it can explain it all, but I'm not too big into science and if I wasn't told that, I wouldn't have known. Although now knowing that, I still find it cool and its entertaining to watch him learning how to use his ability.

There is also life on Mars, and three different type of people live there. To be simple, lets call them red, blue and green. Although are the creatures with the four arms and are the ones who find John. The other two, whose name escapes me (so lets call them red and blue), are more human looking, and both have tattoos. These two countries have been at war with each other for a bit.

 In this storyline, Red has gained the upper hand and the Blue's princess, Dejah Thoris, is forced to marry the red king. So like the rebellious princess she is, Dejah runs away. And like any typical storyline, she gets into trouble and John happens to be nearby to save her. One thing leads to another and Dejah offers to help John get back to Earth. For you romanticist, don't worry there will be a connection between the two.

This movie was enjoyable at its best and I believe is more directed towards a more narrow minded, younger audience. For those of us who know better, I can say you'll find yourself laughing at the cheesey lines spoken by the characters. Especially during scenes between Dejah and John when she admits her attraction to him (shocker there). Also found some similar to Star War during the movie, like the flying contraptions (pod racers from the SW: Phantom Menace), and the giant thing in the middle of the water that looked like a star destroyer.

On the positive side, I did like the ending. You know, since it didn't end chessey. Also gotta mention, Mark Strong knows how to play a villain. You may know Mark Strong from Sherlock Holmes, and The Green Lateran. As for Taylor Kitsch, well don't know what to say, but maybe hes got a future. Although this isn't his first movie appearance since he has appeared in movies like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Covenant, and later on this year in Battlefield. In short, unless you have the movie itch, rent this movie. Or if you want a simple story and chessy one liners.
