Sleepy Hollow "The Sin Eater": Forgiveness Is The Key

Ichabod sitting in a room with candles
Guys Sleepy Hollow is back! I can't believe I survived that long without it. Sleepy Hollow doesn't waste anytime with The Sin Eater has the episode was given the task of finding a way to break the connection between Ichabod and the Headless horseman. We all knew this was coming at some point since our duo needs to defeat the horseman eventually without Ichabod dying. Ichabod dying is bad remember. The Sin Eater also showed us how Ichabod turned to the revolutionary side and first met Katrina. You have to admit you were a bit curious, even though you had to watch Ichabod have that awful hair do, wig thing. Is it a wig? Probably. The Sin Eater also showed me why there are so many fans vying for Ichabbie (I said that right, right?) and the two to get together. There is a strong connection between the two, but there is still a small part of me that is like "they are really good friends" and leaning towards Katrina and Ichabod. I'm sorry! I just feel like Sleepy Hollow should just play off the friendship, not the relationship. In short, The Sin Eater dealt with a whole bunch of mythology and back story this week.

After a much needed recap of Sleepy Hollow so far, The Sin Eater brings us back to our favorite duo watching a little league game where Abbie teaches Ichabod about baseball. She told him that baseball basically represented freedom that the founding fathers fought for. Although, I have think that scene is mostly for the World Series that just concluded. Back to The Sin Eater, after the game Ichabod and Abbie go their separate ways and Ichabod goes to visit his wife's "not" grave. There a mysterious group tranks him and drags Ichabod away to a secret location. Suddenly now night (did they stop Daylight Saving Time too?) Abbie is driving home, or somewhere when Katrina contacts her via a dream (which is not a good idea since it means Abbie fell asleep at the wheel) telling her that Ichabod has been captured and she needs to find the sin eater to save him. So Abbie gets reinforcements with the return of Jenny Mills and they work together to find the sin eater.  Elsewhere in a super secret location, Ichabod wakes up to find himself among Freemasons, who are there to confirm his identity as Ichabod Crane. In flashbacks, we see Ichabod (awful wig intact) as a red coat interrogating a freed slave, Arthur Bernard, about Cicero, and there is where he and Katrina first meet. She is angry that they have injured Arthur, until she finds out that Ichabod still has a conscience and some good still left in him.

The Sin Eater was a good welcome back to Sleepy Hollow's return and an excellent addition to the growing mythology of the show. More importantly The Sin Eater was charged with dealing with the blood link that Sleepy Hollow has kinda pushed to the side for about 5 episodes and it was something that had to be dealt with. Though that solution was simple, it was kinda cool too. Although this means that horseman is free now. That's a problem for later. What was also cool about The Sin Eater was the little bit of Ichabod's history of how he changed sides. It also makes me laugh how evil they portray the redcoats, but I'm unconcerned about that. History tells us that Ichabod was never truly deep into what he was doing for the redcoats and had a slight doubt about what he was doing. In addition to him already being one of the witnesses at that point. It was cute to see Ichabod fall for Katrina the moment he saw her, and she saw the goodness in him that he didn't. Back to present day, I love the baseball scene with Ichabod and Abbie and how Ichabod just jumped up and gave it a try at yelling at the umpire. Oh Ichabod, how I love you. The Sin Eater did an excellent contrast with Abbie this week too by telling Irving the horseman is coming back without a doubt. Compare this to Pilot Abbie who was unsure of what she saw. This is what lead her to working with her sister Jenny. The most heartbreaking moment of The Sin Eater has to go to when Ichabod called her Abbie when he usually calls her Ms. Mills. My feels man. My feels for the deep friendship they share.

Now there are somethings about The Sin Eater that did bog it down slightly. Or we'll call it things I have issues with cause no episode is perfect. Despite all the mythology dealt with this week and Ichabod's past, I have to say for some reason The Sin Eater was not my favorite episode of the bunch. I don't know why exactly, but it isn't. Although if I had to put words to it, I would say that Sleepy Hollow sacrificed some of the elements I liked for all that information they dealt with. Like there was no fights with the duo fighting off evil, although Ichabod did stab someone in the flashback. Which for some reason they are still using that lens effect I complained about earlier. You know Sleepy Hollow, other shows use colouring to show flashbacks, not effects that distort the image. Finally, the whole sin eater thing was a bit obvious. Not going to say more so I don't spoil it.

I am glad Sleepy Hollow is back on the air and The Sin Eater answered some questions that have been left open for a bit like the blood tie and why Ichabod changed sides. And you know what, it wasn't lame and was reasonable. We saw Ichabod hesitate and treat Arthur with respect. Ichabod is a good person. Now he is free from the horseman (SPOILER ALERT) and the horseman from Ichabod. And he's back to cause problems next week. Sounds fun. Did anyone notice they shortened the opening sequence this week. Is is permanent? See you sleepy heads next week.

What do you think of Ichabbie? Did you like how The Sin Eater handled Ichabod's past?
