Beauty and the Beast "Date Night": The Ups and Downs of a Relationship

We all knew from the moment we met Gabe that there was something about it that was going to cause trouble and create this mystery about him. This week with Date Night, Gabe finally reveals to Catherine his mutated DNA and his knowledge of Vincent. It also deal with Catherine and Vincent toying with the idea of having a normal life, or wanting to have one. In a way Date Night's main purpose was to build up for the finale of Batb and set the stakes. Though I wished Batb didn't have to drag it's plot through some over-used plot points for some drama. At least they didn't last long. Overall Date Night was Vincent and Catherine exploring the future of their relationship as well as their limits.

So Date Night began with Catherine and Tess in the change room after working out and Catherine mentions to Tess that she could be pregnant due to being 10 days late. So while shes taking a test, Cat talks to Vincent about it and he mentions he has no idea what would happen to the child due to his DNA, and not to mention to being hunted all his life. Then the test comes back negative and Catherine assure him it's alright and shes happy the way things are. Later on Catherine and Tess head to Gabe's hotel room for protection detail, and when Gabe sends Tess away for coffee, he reveals he knows about Catherine's boyfriend and his corrupted DNA. As Catherine is denying these claims, Gabe's eyes go yellow and he reveals that he also has corrupted DNA and has been managing the symptoms using meds. Gabe asks to meet Vincent for help, and Catherine heads out to Vincent's place. She tells Vincent about Gabe being like him, which Vincent finds it hard to believe, and brings up the meds that could allow him to have a normal life. After some convincing, they head out to Gabe's place, only to find a dead assassin and a beasted out Gabe gone.

Date Night was really relationships in a nutshell and what we say, but are really thinking. Catherine and Vincent were the obvious target of this as long as they have been together, they never really thought of the future. Sure they always said they would be together but never what they saw in years to come. It is good to see them at this point they're thinking about what they want in life. Whether it's a white picket fence or having 8 children (sorry correction 3 kids and a small dog). It is really cool that Batb decided to put another beast in their universe. We always knew Gabe was up to no good and that Batb made good use of his character. No love triangle there, and this proves you can put another man into a relationship without having the character romantically conflicted between two characters. Now Gabe being a beast was interesting due to what he represented a life in the open that Vincent couldn't have. Also beast against beast was pretty cool.

As I mentioned before above about Date Night used some plot points I wish it didn't. First there was the "OMG I could be pregnant" thing with Cat. I think we all knew that she wasn't, but why did Batb drag their characters through that? Other than love triangles I dislike the whole "she could be pregnant" thing. It just creates drama for pure drama's sake. Maybe later they can deal with it again, but it was not the right time to do something like that at the moment. Then Batb jumped to the next relationship problem of drugs. After finding out the drugs would kill Vincent, Catherine tells him to stop, but after tasting freedom Vincent did it anyway. Usually taking drugs behind your girlfriend's back is a relationship ender, but thank god Vincent got busted really on. Although I can forgive him for being cute about it saying, "I wanted to go to the movies with you". Now that I think about it, about half the episode was filler while the other half dealt with the main arc.

So here we are Beasties as we are one episode away from finishing up season 1 of Batb. Date Night was decent, but up to the standards Batb has set for it's in the second half of season 1. It wasn't terrible though as VinCat made up for a lot. Just noticed though they tend to say a lot of cheesy one liners to each other a lot, which is adorable. It is like they want us to gif these quotes and horde them in a corner. Best line of the night has to go to JT and Vincent as they banter about Gabe ("Oh, god. She is pregnant?" "No, Gabe" "Gabe got her pregnant?" "Gabe is the one with corrupted DNA"). VinCat better last man.

What do you think about Gabe? Do you think there was some unnecessary plot points?
