Merlin Season 5: Top 5 Episodes

With Merlin Season 5 all done with, it is time to pick the top 5 episodes that stood out from the rest. The episodes that I enjoyed the most and were just fantastic. Would like to remind you all that this is not in order of like, but rather order of appearance. So let's begin!

1. The Death Song of Uther Pendragon
The third episode of season 5 dealt with Arthur spending his birthday missing his father and wishing to speak with him once more. Then a magical horn falls into Arthur's hands that enables him to see the spirit of Uther once more. Soon Arthur unwittingly releases Uther's spirit into the mortal world and Uther begins reeking havoc on Camelot. Then Arthur and Merlin decide to take matters into their own hands and put Uther to rest. The best scene of the entire episode was when Merlin revealed his magic to Uther while declaring Uther's reign is over. Uther is so shocked at this, not to mention angry that magic had always been at the heart of Camelot. Merlin though is finally to reveal his true strengths and say what he wants to say without the guise of old Merlin. In the end though, Arthur chooses Merlin over his father and puts Uther's spirit to rest.

2. Another's Sorrow
The familiar face of Princess Mithian returns to Merlin when their kingdom is attacked by Camelot's enemies. Mithian arrives in Camelot with the news and begs Arthur's help in rescuing her injured father. Arthur agrees to help and sets out with his knights to give aid. Little did Arthur know that this was a trap and that Mithian's maid was actually an aged Morgana, who was keeping on eye on her little prisoner. Of course Merlin had begun suspecting something was wrong, but wasn't sure. The Princess also couldn't sit around doing nothing either as she tried whenever she could to warn Camelot of the danger. It was great to see her not lie down and take what Morgana was doing. When Mithian was finally able to warn Merlin by writing "Morgana", it was too late as Morgana finds Merlin and injuries him. That scene itself is one of the scenes that fans were screaming at their televisions, "use your magic!". Thanks to help from Giaus, Merlin is able to arrive in time to save Arthur from Odin's men. What I like about Another's Sorrow was that it was the first time we saw Merlin in danger. Otherwise a great story.

3. The Hollow Queen
This was the episode that Morgana and an Evil Gwen decided it was time to take out Merlin so he'd stop interfering with their plans. So get a young boy named Daegal to approach Merlin as a young druid boy asking for Merlin's help for his younger sick sister. Unable to say to the druids and people who need help, Merlin agrees to go, leaving Arthur's side. Who is obviously lost while Merlin is gone. So when Merlin arrives at the destination, he realizes that Daegal had lied to him and just then Morgana blasts Merlin and poisons him. Luckily for Merlin, Daegal felt guilty about leading Merlin to his death and helps Merlin recover and get back to Camelot in time to save Arthur. Unfortunately Daegal dies protecting Merlin, and Merlin realizes they need to do something about Gwen. Although I did like the character of Daegal and wished he could have stuck around.

4. With All My Heart
This was the episode of Merlin that had us laughing and crying at the same time. Not to mention it was one of the best episodes of Merlin to date. It didn't take long for Merlin to reveal to Arthur that Gwen was working with Morgana. So the three (Arthur, Merlin and Giaus) hatch a plan to save Gwen from Morgana. They soon realize the only way to break the hold on Gwen is to get her to the Cauldron of Arianrhod, summon the goddess, and get Gwen to enter the lake willingly. So they need to drug her in order to get there, so the three work on getting Gwen to take the drug which in her drink. It was real interesting to see Arthur in on the plan for once. Along the way though, Merlin falls off a cliff and Arthur attempts to rescue Merlin, but gets trapped himself. Anyways, the scene that really took the cake was when Arthur used his love for Gwen to convince her to walk into the lake. No power can stop the power of love! Not to mention there is nothing like Merlin pretending to be an old woman.

5. Diamond of the Day
As always, the finale of Merlin are just so great not to be included in a top 5 as they are the ones that change Merlin for the better. This two part finale dealt with both Merlin and Arthur having problems of their own thanks to Morgana. Merlin's identity as Emyrs was finally known to Morgana and she decided to take him out of the picture by taking his magic away. Knowing he is nothing without magic, Merlin sets out to get his magic back and is forced to leave Arthur's side. Merlin does get trapped in the cave thanks to Morgana, but he is able to speak to his father and get his magic back. Merlin is able to return in time and send Morgana's army into a retreat. Not in time though to stop Mordred's mortally wounding blow to Arthur. Merlin finds the wounded Arthur and whisks him away to the forest to protect him. There Merlin reveals to Arthur that he has magic and Arthur is shocked and angry at this secret his friend has been keeping from him. The rest of the finale is Merlin trying to save Arthur from his death and Arthur realizing that magic isn't bad and Merlin has done so much for him over the years. Arthur soon thanks Merlin for all he has done for him. Not going to get into the ending as it just breaks my heart.

Well that's my top 5 episodes of Merlin. These episode I found had moments that made my heart jump while watching them and reminded me why I love Merlin to begin with. Sad to see Merlin end, but all good things must come to an end. Figures though that Merlin leaves Merlin revealing his magic to the end of the series. Not to mention a lot of characters died, luckily your favorites survived. Mine did. Next week, my review of season 5 of Merlin overall.

What was your favorite episode of season 5?
