Red Dawn Is An Unexpected Action Comedy

I honestly don't know how to describe the mess that was Red Dawn. Yes it was a good action movie, but it was predictable, messy and thoughtless. Not to mention a mid way Subway commercial. Yes, they had some major product placement of Subway in Red Dawn that was actually really funny to watch. On that note, a fair majority of Red Dawn was unintentionally funny. Despite all it's down falls though, Red Dawn did have some of it's stars stand out despite the material they were given to use.

So Red Dawn starts off with a football game featuring the home team, the Wolverines, who lose the match. The captain, Matt Eckert (Josh Peck), is driven home by his girlfriend Erica (Isabel Lucas), where he finds his older brother Jed (Chris Hemsworth), has returned home. There is some obvious brother tension, but that all is pushed to the side when North Korea invades America and the brothers are forced to flee. After witnessing the murder of their father, they decide to take matters into their own hands and take a stand for their country. After some unspecified, but seemly short training session, their little army is trained and ready to take on some Koreans. They sabotage and steal from the Koreans while spreading their name, "The Wolverines", around town to create hope. It is not easy as they are constantly hunted and are always on the move.

Now there is very little about Red Dawn that I liked. The action was okay, but a bit spread out with the drama. I have seen better action movies in films like Transformers. There has to be some credit given to some of the actors, who despite the content, did a good job (Chris Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson). For the Supernatural family, we were treated to two actors from our favorite television show appearing together on screen for the first time (John Winchester meet Sam's girlfriend). I actually spent most of the movie looking for Jeffery Dean Morgan. Despite the story being, well ridiculous, I had a lot of fun poking fun at the movie. Once again, the best scene of that whole entire movie was the subway scene where major product placement took place.

Now Red Dawn was no diamond in the rough as it tried to be too ambitious. I felt the Eckart brothers has no chemistry what so ever, and the younger brother was more of a sidekick (being brother to Hemsworth kinda does that). There was this scene in the movie that just made me really dislike Matt Eckart and find him really annoying, was when he ditched everything to save his girl (don't think with your downstairs brain!) This basically screwed the team's whole plan and got one of the non-essential characters killed. Red Dawn is also very predictable as it literacy gives you signs of whats going to happen next. In addition to killing off anyone in the group whose name wasn't on the movie poster.


To sum everything up, Red Dawn is mainly for those who are curious, and/or fans of the previous film that spawned this. There are so many plot holes, and bad writing that it's actually really funny to watch. On the upside, you did get to see your favorite character(s) in action. The action itself was okay, but once again, I've seen better. I apologize if you loved Red Dawn or if you didn't think it was that bad, but this is my opinion. Our rating for Red Dawn is:
