Arthur is now king of Camelot. |
Now to the main purpose of this week's post; the top 5 episodes of Merlin. Now the episodes are not in order chronological order, but are just the 5 that stand out the most from this season.
The Darkest Hour (Parts 1 & 2)
This was the season premier of season 4 and quickly set up where everyone is now. Like usual, when everything is too good to be true, hell breaks loose. Morgana, sacrificing Morguse, unleashes an undead nightmare on the world. Spirits of the dead begin killing people, and can't be stop but can be slowed down by fire. This episode gave Merlin a feeling of vulnerability, and a sense of duty to his destiny. This episode also had its highlights such as Lancelot meeting the great dragon, Merlin sacrificing himself for Arthur and watching the heartbreaking scene as Arthur is forced to send Merlin away. Its even better when you see the joy on Arthur's face when Merlin returns. This episode is one of the great highlights of the friendship between Merlin and Arthur.
The Wicked Day
And who better to help him than Merlin - no wait, old Merlin. Colin Morgan is great at comedy it shows as he plays old Merlin and his antics. My personal favorite part was when Merlin made Arthur carry him on Arthur's back. Merlin treats Arthur like a horse, and that scene will make you burst out in laughter. Although, things turn for the worst when Merlin' magic goes wrong (thanks to Morgana) and Uther dies. Arthur is now no longer open on magic and is still far from accepting it. Although, following his father's death, Arthur is crowned king.
A Servant of Two Masters
This was this season's humorous episode. As in previous episodes, there is always a humorous episode. This was started in season 2 with Beauty and the Beast, and later on in season 3 with Goblin's Gold. This episode dealt with Morgana using Merlin to kill Arthur. One problem, she kinda forgot his brain, so Merlin makes a terrible assassin.Again Colin Morgan does an excellent job of giving us laughs as we watch Merlin attempt to kill Arthur. Not to mention Gwen and Giaus working together to stop the bewitched Merlin. Also throw in a high strung servant and you have got a couple of laughs. There is also a serious note, when Merlin confronts Morgana as Emerys (Old Merlin) and the two battle it out. Not to mention that the battle between Morgana and Morgan is fortold.
Lancelot Du Lac
For many looking forward to the return of the fallen knight Lancelot, their call was answered when Lancelot returned, but as a shade. This episode is also a key point in the Arthur and Gwen relationship as Arthur proposes to Gwen. Morgana hears about it and summons a shadow of Lancelot to destroy the relationship between Arthur and Gwen. Everything soon falls to pieces and Gwen is banished from Camelot. It doesn't take Merlin long to figure out that Lancelot is not the same as he was before and that hes working for Morgana. This episode also shows for once that Morgana wins for once and Merlin is too late in stopping her.
Sword in the Stone (Part 1 & 2)
Finales is always one of the grandest episodes. The first part was humorous as Merlin accidentally enchants Arthur to be a simpleton and obeys whatever Merlin asks him to do. We also got a few laughs in before Camelot came under siege about Arthur. In this state Arthur mentions to Merlin that he should thank Merlin more often.Despite the episode being directly about Arthur's road to becoming the king hes meant to be. Its also about the relationship between Merlin and Arthur. It comes to the point where Merlin becomes the one person Arthur can trust. His one true friend, and you know what, its about time he realized it. This episode also features the wedding of Gwen and Arthur.
Overall, Season 4 was a great season of Merlin, and I very much look forward to season 5. This is it for the Merlin blogs, last one will be next week with the overall look as season 4. Till next time then. For now I leave you with a clip from Merlin.
