Sam and Lucifer |
I have to say that Repo Man was worth the wait as it deliver elements that fans have been waiting to see. With a flashback, fan saw the Impala once again. The flashback was about 4 years back in the past, so it was around Season 3 time when Sam and Dean were looking for Lilith. We also saw the re-appearance of the amulet, so fans who have been asking about it since season 5 can be satisfied for a bit. Gotta give Supernatural props for getting very close to looking like Season 3 with the except of Sam's hair (we all can remember how Sam's hair look back then.) Although I do agree with Laura Prudom's point about how Dean knew how to torture post-hell (season 4 to be more precise).
Writing-wise, Edlund has delivered again. Despite his so-so episode with How To Win Friends and Influence Monsters, Repo Man was a success as far as I'm concerned. Going to say right now, its one of my favorites of this season (along side his other episode Hello Cruel World). If you have read my other posts of Supernatural, you can probably remember me ranting about how I want to see Sam's hell. Repo Man was the answer to that rant. If you don't, well you got the point.
Like every episode post-Death's Door, Dean calls Frank up on information on Dick Roman. I find this plot point reminds the viewer there is still a bigger story here and that Supernatural will eventually reveal it to us. It also reminds us of Dean's motivation and in a way of how much Bobby's loss affects him. After the phone call, Sam and Dean look over a case that similar to one they faced four years ago. When it turns out to be, they visit people who were involved in the case last time. They meet up with Nora, who sends them to Jeffery, they guy they tortured four years ago. Jeffery "helped" them by telling them about the demon's list and showing Dean the demon lair. If they trailer hadn't given it away Jeffery's mental state, you probably wouldn't have thought that he was behind the murders. Although you probably would have thought that Dean got kidnapped himself as Jeffery drugged him. But that didn't happen, and Jeffery attempted summon his demon back.
The highlight of this episode was Lucifer's return though, and Sam's slow descent into madness. Repo Man played with the idea that Sam has been seeing Lucifer although season 7, but we haven't seen Lucifer until this episode. Al-throughout this episode, we see Lucifer trying to get Sam's attention, or in a way acknowledge him. It was quite distributing to see Lucifer make Sam see everyone in the library smash their head on the tables. In a way, we saw a bit of the hell Sam has been dealing with. Another very nice part of this episode was when Lucifer stuck his tongue out at Sam, and it was forked.
Over the episode, Sam begins to depend on Lucifer. With this, Sam has unknowingly let Lucifer in and making the power of the scar useless. Sam can no longer tune Lucifer out and is going to begin his downward spiral. Which we won't see for another three weeks. Although I would like to point out that in Tv.com's review commented on how when flames breaks out around Sam after Lucifer gleefully cries out "Good morning, Vietnam" is similar when Sam has his hell flashback. I'm not sure how its similar, unless they are referring to the fact that Sam is in a way waking up to his hell. Not to mention that line refers to a Robin Williams movie.
I also disagree with Fear.net's review near the end saying this episode doesn't have any moments that stand out. Moments like the scene in the library, Lucifer's tongue, and even the ending scene stood out for me. Season 7 keep on delivering us great episodes, and people expect to see Misha Collins' return soon. Lucky for us, Supernatural released a preview for the upcoming episode(s).
Will write what I think of the next episode in three weeks time.
