Arrow 'Legacies': Helping The Little Man

It's Oliver and Diggle's first mission together! I think that was pretty much the highlight of Legacies as Oliver finally had someone to watch his back and help him out in his vigilante work. As Diggle promised, he was Oliver's voice of reason, and was no sidekick, but a partner. Not only was this relationship explored this episode, but others like Tommy and Laurel, were too. In the direction Arrow is heading, I have a feeling that something is going to happen that is going to shatter all these bonds. That is probably way in the though and evadable. Legacies was much more lighter than Damaged.

In typical Arrow fashion, a workout inspired session kicked off the episode with the pleasant addition of Diggle, who was getting his butt handed to him by Oliver. After the workout, Oliver reveals his next target to Diggle, and Diggle offers another suggestion to Oliver to fight small crime. The small crime in question was a recent bank robbery where a cop was shot. Oliver refuses, stating he must rid the city of its "disease", not its "symptoms". Back at home, Oliver runs into his mother who is feeling lonely without Walter (who left in Damaged) and informs them that Carter Bowen (Warren Christie) will be visiting. The more important issue of this conversation was that Moria mentions to Oliver that she feels like she doesn't know him anymore since he got back.

On the other end of the city, Tommy was trying to woo Laurel into a date, but was finding it not so easy as she kept brushing him off. After going going to Thea for some advice, Tommy gets the idea to throw a fund raiser for Laurel's law department (which Laurel dubs it as "The first annual attempt to get back into my pants gala"). Even Diggle gets an idea to motivate Oliver into helping the little man as he tricks Oliver into meeting the cop that got shot and even went as far as informing the wife that Oliver is paying. It works and Oliver begins to track down the robbers in an effort to stop them. With some digging, Oliver figures out their identities, and that they have a connection to Queen industries.

Ever since the idea of Diggle and Oliver working together became an idea, I have been waiting for Arrow to get the two to work together. Sure there was a bit of that in Damaged, but it is nothing compared to Legacies. I really love how Arrow is not making Diggle out to be a sidekick, but Oliver's right hand man and the person to keep Oliver in line. I also love how Arrow keeps poking at the fact that Oliver is not up to date on the recent pop culture and it's probably never going to get old. Well depending on how well Arrow plays it. Arrow has other ways to make us laugh though like when Diggle tells Felicity, "Nope. Not even a MySpace account. It was a very dark time." Not going to explain the joke, but you'll get it and giggle. Onto more seriousness, Legacies brought Oliver and Moira together more as near the end of the episode, they share a cute scene together eating burgers.

So now what did I not like about the episode? More than anything, I felt that Arrow was trying to squeeze too many plot lines into one episode. One half was Diggle and Oliver, and the other Tommy and Laurel. Not to forget the Mother son bonding either. That is just footnotes. I found the Thea crush on Tommy thing a bit weird and out of place as if it were like the writers decided to throw that in the mixing pot. On a side note, although its not a terrible thing, but I am at this point wishing that Arrow would get an opening sequence of some sort, instead of the whole explaining the whole intro again. I get that they are trying to gather more of audience, but sooner or later its going to be too late for it. So Arrow, either get some opening credits or an title sequence.

So this was our first taste of Diggle and Oliver in action together and it was a bit of what we hope the partnership would be. Also it seems that one by one, Arrow is bonding it's characters together and mending bridges. I can only assume to only break them later on in Arrow's run. After Legacies, I am wondering if Felicity will continue to make appears in episodes of Arrow. Or will she get a larger role as the show moves on? Well we won't know since there will be no new Arrow next week as it takes a one week hiatus until November 28, 2012. Not sure why, but I'll wait out the hiatus for whatever reason the CW did it for. See you in two weeks.

Do you see Oliver helping the little man in the future? Do you want to see more Diggle action?
