Sleepy Hollow "Blood Moon": Things Are Getting Witchy

I have to say that I'm quite happy with the turn out of Sleepy Hollow and the tone it has set with the first two episodes. Unlike the Pilot, Blood Moon is charged with building some back story on our two main leads of Abbie and Ichabod. Blood Moon took Sleepy Hollow this week away from the obvious headless horseman plot line and moved into the whole "there is a bigger supernatural conspiracy" thing that they touched on early on in the plot. Let's not forget some couple Ichabod vs. Modern day challenges that I think is a bit of the charm of Sleepy Hollow. Blood Moon was certainly interesting with a couple lucky coincidences that moved the story along. Let us not forget though, that Blood Moon did grab our attention and firmly hold it throughout the episode. Although the promo did fib a bit by missing a couple scenes.

Blood Moon started this week off in a dream as Ichabod is running from the assembled horsemen when he is dragged underground, where is his wife is. Katria uses this opportunity to give Ichabod a warning that another witch will rise followed by the forces of darkness. Ichabod wakes up and gets ready (with the help of a bunch of stickies) and wait for Abbie to return to tell her the news. When Abbie does return, she shoots this theory down and they head to the funeral for the chief. Elsewhere, some bad CGI reveals SPOILER's revival. Soon SPOILER is off to no good and brings the witch back to begin killing off people and stuff like that. Abbie and Ichabod get word and head out. When Ichabod sees the scene, he realizes he had seen it before in his civil war days and tells Abbie about the witch that did it. They soon work to figure out who her next target is and put a stop to her witchcraft.

Most shows seem to have problems after the Pilot and seem to lack the edge that it had, but Blood Moon felt like it belonged after the Pilot. Blood Moon introduced us to another side of the Sleepy Hollow universe and beginning to set it up for episodes to come. This week it was witches and how they work in the Sleepy Hollow world. We also got a little peak into the back stories of our two leads. We learned how Katria and Ichabod met and how Abbie got into some drugs. The best moment though was when Ichabod discovered the tax on the donuts and went on a full on rant about them. It was also amusing to see stickies everywhere in his motel room telling him how things worked and then experiencing them. Although curious who wrote those for him, but I'm pretty sure it was Abbie. Now we need to talk about the opening sequences, for Blood Moon, Sleepy Hollow unveiled a new opening sequence which recent television shows (Supernatural, Arrow, Beauty and the Beast) have decided to replace with a title card instead. I found it personally very cool as it kept with the theme of Sleepy Hollow and nicely showcased it's cast. I'm sorry, I like pretty things.

Now some things in Blood Moon were a bit on the "what the hell" or not so believable side. There is the whole SPOILER revival and how that happened. I guess the powers for evil must really like him. Although the CGI on the neck area was laughable and I'm not sure if we were supposed to believe that it was realistic. Cause seriously, it was not. Then there is the witch, how much of a villain she was this week. She was supposed to be a bad ass, but all it took was a bunch of gun powder exploding to stop her? Sorry, was expecting something really bad ass to stop her. This leads me to the convenient tunnel under the station, Ichabod remembered ( at least they explained why he remembered) that just happened to connect the station to the storage area. Oh well, I'll just look the other way with this one. The last thing is how easy Sleepy Hollow wants the police department to sweep everything under the rug and not admit there are supernatural things out there. Its like Sleepy Hollow wants to use to purposely to create drama.

Blood Moon was a decent episode and an excellent addition to the series. Let's hope that Sleepy Hollow can keep this up. I am already hooked at this point and will keep watching. I wonder how they are going to keep using SPOILER and if he will ever be discovered. I also hope that they give Ichabod and Abbie an ally sometime in the series. If you're thinking Abbie's boss, we don't know what the hell he is up to. For the winner of Ichabod vs. Modern day, it goes to Ichabod and the Donut tax. But then again no one, no matter what time, likes taxes. We're two episodes in, and Sleepy Hollow is still interesting.

What did you think of Blood Moon? Do you think that witch died that easily? What's your donut tax?
