Arrow "Vertigo": Discoveries

Sometimes it's hard to watch a show and be both a reviewer and viewer at the same time. It takes shows your passionate about to really break it down and find what you love and hate about it. For me, watching Arrow is like this. Sometimes it can be easy, while other times I struggle for words. I found this week's episode of Arrow, Vertigo, interesting though as it tested what each character thought they knew about each other. Fascinating stuff right? Once again Oliver continues to lean on Diggle and Felicity. I have this feeling in my gut that she is going to become more essential to the story other than the IT girl.

Oliver jumped into action this week in Vertigo as he begun his hunt for the mysterious drug vertigo. Oliver manages to get a name of the creator (Count) out of one of the drug dealers. Oliver heads back to his secret lair, and tells Diggle about his discovery. Oliver is about to head out again, but Diggle stops him, reminding Oliver of Thea's trial. At the trial, basically Thea is not granted parole, and created into the poster girl for justice on using vertigo. It's fun being a Queen right? With the threat of jail over Thea's head, Oliver is desperate to save her. He talks to a cop friend of his about the Count, and asks Laurel to ask her father to pull a favor with the judge on Thea's case. So Oliver begins to track the Count down using his Russian contacts (didn't forget them did you?). Which involved some tested that Oliver did this awesome dead "fake out" hold. Soon Oliver comes face to face with the Count with the intentions of following them to their hideout. But everything doesn't go as planned.

As I have mentioned above, a real good strong point of Vertigo was some of our main characters making some discoveries of their own about the people they thought they knew. That and Oliver taking out the Count and his men without his bow. It shows that Oliver can do much more than use his bow and arrow. Although this has probably been done before in Arrow, but it reminds us of how honed Oliver's skills are. Not to mention that he wasn't 100% either. I also enjoyed the little banter between Diggle and Oliver throughout the episode ("Fantastic. Looking forward to my new and exciting career as a drug dealer."), in addition to once again always having Oliver's back. Even if it means chaining Oliver to a table (please contain yourselves). Vertigo also saw Thea finally learned about the truth about her father, and Oliver learning a truth about his mother. I am looking forward to seeing how this discovery will play out for the rest of the season.

Now much as it was cool to discover things, Vertigo wasn't as high paced as I would like. Or rather the story wasn't doing Arrow justice. I did find the Count to be an interesting villain, but was his master plan really just to sell drugs? It makes him seem like a high stakes drug dealer with underlings who he dispatches with drugs if not obeyed. Sounds like a nice guy right? I also finding it hard to believe that Felicity is willing to do the tasks Oliver asks of her using total BS excuses. Much as the interactions is hilarious, she must be suspicious right? That or she just can't say no to Oliver Queen (why would you?).

Vertigo was an okay episode in Arrow's first season as it continues to develop characters that just keep growing. Also I think this was the first episode Oliver didn't work out, but he did end up topless and chained to a table. I find the working out all the time excessive, but I don't mind a shirtless guy once and a while. Next week Arrow, please bring me something to talk about other than men strapped to a table. Give me a plot that puts me on the edge of my seat, and not notice your product placement (cough cough Windows 8). Also would it hurt to have some decent images on google to use for my reviews?

What was your favorite part of the episode? How you think Oliver's choke hold worked?
