Supernatural 'Bitten': What An "Awesome" Episode

So the word of the day is "awesome" as Bitten was clearly an awesome episode of Supernatural. Although it is really one of those episodes where you either love it or dislike it. I really enjoyed Bitten, and the different style of story telling it brought to the table. In a way, Bitten took a small break from the whole Sam and Dean bicker about what happen in the year they were apart. In addition to seeing the Supernatural universe from a different perspective.

So Bitten begins with the end in a way as Sam and Dean bust into a house with a dead body on the floor and blood all over a wall. Investigating, they find a laptop with a sticky saying "Play Me", and they decide to play the contents of the computer. The video takes us to the main plot of Bitten as it follows the life of three college students Brian, Michael and Kate as they make a movie. This takes us to the classic hot girl gets with hot boy and odd kid feels felt out as time passes by. Then a murder takes place on campus and the FBI (I wonder who that is) comes to investigate. It gets even weirder when Michael gets attacked in the woods and is bitten by something.

Michael soon finds that he is not normal any more as he is stronger than he was. Like anything with upsides, there is always a downside, as Michael notices changes to his body and an hunger he can't satisfy. Not to mention he blacks out and kills a man and eats his heart. The group is obviously freaked out, and try to make sense of it. Then they notice that the FBI guys aren't normal FBI agents and they know more they let on. After some following of the agents, they figure out that Michael is not a god, but a pure blood werewolf. Werewolf. Werewolf! It has been a while since we also saw werewolves in Supernatural (last was Heart), so it's welcome surprise. Now Michael, Brain and Kate are forced to figure what to do and avoid the FBI agents.

Words cannot express how much I loved Bitten and how Supernatural is back on track. In between all the footage was little jokes about the brothers and lines like "Dude, they just sat and talked about how they've been apart for a year. You were probably right about that whole office-romance thing." Or Dean asking Sam, " Do I really say "awesome" a lot?" What made this episode even better was the fact that it went 20 minutes without a commercial break, which was awesome. Now the element that really made Bitten such a great episode was the fact that it told this story about three college students who were dealt a fate they didn't deserve instead of living a normal life. The rawness of the footage helped the story get more emotion and make the viewer feel like they're watching it.

Now onto the topic of werewolves as Supernatural brought back them back after putting the creatures on the back burner for like 6 years. The whole werewolf thing was changed a bit from what it was back in season 2, and it felt like it was influenced by shows like Teen Wolf and Being Human (which Carver was the showrunner of).

I would also like to touch on the ending of Bitten where Dean is faced again with the decision to let a monster walk free. Unlike in The Girl Next Door with Amy, Dean decides to let the person (not naming the person for spoiler's sake) go, which says how much he has changed since.

Now, Bitten wasn't the most perfect episode of Supernatural (that is reserved for Point Of No Return). For those fans of the overall arc, besides the slight bicker from Sam and Dean, Bitten was another filler episode to the season. In addition to no sign of Castiel either. Although it would be really weird if Bitten went to a Purgatory flashback randomly. A thing that irked me this episode was the fact that these people literary recorded EVERYTHING. It made sense after Michael got his werewolf abilities, but in the beginning it was like they recorded to cure their boredom. Otherwise the camera thing worked for me as a storytelling device.

Bitten proves once again that Supernatural hasn't lost its touch and can still deliver great episodes. My faith in Season 8 is now restored since as I figure, the first few episodes are always the hardest. Or that is what I tell myself anyways. Bitten had me glued to the tv screen absorbing every moment of the episode, and laugh whenever little jokes about the Winchesters were made. Although I wonder if SPOILER will show up again sometime in the series? Just a thought. Also, does this mean we will be seeing more werewolves in the future of Supernatural?

Next week, the main arc returns along with Benny and Purgatory flashbacks. Are you ready for Blood Brothers? Also how cool is it that Supernatural airs on Halloween this year? Will the astronaut from Season 4 return to spur Dean yet again? Will there even be some Halloween jokes?
What did you think of Bitten?
