Beauty and the Beast 'Pilot': The Cute Cop Show

Last night, the CW remake of the old television show Beauty and the Beast, hit small screens for the first time as the Pilot introduced us to the characters and type of story we should expect from this new remake. The one main obstacle though for Beauty and the Beast was the early reviews of Pilot were not so hot about it. As a show designated for young girls, it was not meant to have profound meanings, but it's not sending good messages either. Beauty and the Beast is probably going to be one of those shows whether you love it or you just hate it.

So being the fairy tale love story it is, Pilot kicks off with the character Catherine Chandler (Kristen Kreuk) as a young teenager working at a bar, and is closing up for the night. As she is about to leave, she finds that her car is dead and resorts to calling her mom for help. This scene I believe was meant to build up that fact that Cat and her mom were very close, which is why when the mom gets shot and killed, it really effects Cat. You know, despite the fact that its kinda random, but very sad. Catherine is soon running for her life and trips on a root. Just when she thought she was a goner, she was saved by a mysterious beast.

Years later, Catherine is now a New York cop working in homicide when she comes across a murder scene with a fingerprint of a dead military doctor, Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan). Catherine follows this lead to Keller's former roommate T.J Forbes (portrayed by the guy from Ghostfacers), who seems a bit suspicious. After some evidence comes up, Catherine heads back, and soon finds the thought to be dead Vincent Keller alive in the loft. After a conflict in the subway (and Kreuk being a badass), Catherine discovers that Vincent had been the one who saved her that night. Not only that, but there is a secret government agency after Vincent and now her.

For some reason I somewhat enjoyed the episode. I didn't absolutely love it, but it didn't make me want to bash my brains out. The audience already knew that Beauty and the Beast was going to be a romance story targeted towards young women and it was going to be more cute than deep. Not to mention the crime stuff will take the second burner to the romance between Vincent and Catherine. I mean don't all girls love a hot bad boy, no? If not, it doesn't hurt that Jay Ryan is easy on the eyes.

Unfortunately, Beauty and the Beast was no diamond in the rough as it went for the cliches and stereotypes. Since obviously the show is about the relationship between Vincent and Catherine, you can expect that the crime stories will be very simple and probably require on a regular basis for Vincent to help Catherine on cases. In addition to probably having to save her tough as nails butt. Beauty and the Beast is also potentially setting up a love triangle between Vincent, Catherine and Evan (the guy with the British accent). I don't like love triangles. They are just seriously just an excuse for a plot point and shipping wars. I would also like for Catherine's sidekick, Tess, to stop her stereotype as the tough as nails, best friend, and an accent I can't place. I found her a bit annoying and put there just to move the scene when Kreuk needed the moment.

In short, Beauty and the Beast will be yet another cop show with a supernatural romance twist. If Beauty and the Beast can break out of this shell, there is potential to be better (I hope). Which is why I'm probably gonna continue to watch Beauty and the Beast (and the fact that I'm a sucker for romance). Just keep in mind when you watch Beauty and the Beast that you are not going to get a great story or a mind boggle, but rather some eye candy and the beginning of  a relationship.
