Total Recall is about a man named Douglas Quaid who lives an ordinary life with his wife in the colony. Due to a chemical war, only two places are left that humans can inhabit: the colony and the great Britain empire. There is always the alpha dog of course and this case its The Great Britain Empire. Doug has a longing for a different life during his usual routine when he comes upon Rekall. Just as Doug is about to do it, the police break in and Doug sons finds himself a wanted man. Not only that, but everything he thought he knew seems to be a lie. Doug soon finds himself teaming up with rebel fighter, Melina and the resistance. Thus the epic chase (and explosions) ensue as Doug embarks on his journey to discover himself.
Total Recall had a couple great qualities about it that makes the movie worth watching. First is obviously the action as it is a collection of combat, futuristic car chases, explosions and actions that don't seem humanly possible. Total Recall's action takes you along for the ride the whole way. It was even smart as to cast actors who knew their way around an action scene and stunts. Would to point Kate Beckinsale's experience in kicking ass due to her involvement in the Underworld franchise and boy she showed it. Total Recall has great visuals as well as it created its futuristic world beautifully. It creates a great contrast between the places as you can see the difference between the upper class (The Great Britain Empire) and the lower class (the colony). I do admit the story was not the strongest, but for its purpose it suited Total Recall. Doug never diverted from he thought he knew, and did what he thought was right. Even though he could do things he never knew he could.
Since I went to the movie with a low opinion of it, I found myself picking at Total Recall more than watching it. My main problem was that Total Recall was trying to be like Inception, but we all know that no movie will be as insane as Inception. And because I watched Inception first, I kept comparing Total Recall to it. Total Recall was attempting to throughout the movie to make you figure out what was real and what wasn't. From the very beginning the viewer had a feeling and knew what the real world was between the two. At the very end of the movie it tried to make you question what you thought again, but you knew your answer. Well this is what I found the experience like.
Total Recall is not a terrible movie, but it does have room to grow. If your looking for a good action movie or just a movie to fill in the void The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers left, Total Recall is worth looking into. Total Recall though, needs to figure out its story more instead of attempting to be like other successful movies (cough cough Inception). If you liked Total Recall, good for you. Our rating is:
