Sherlock Holmes and John Watson |
Personally, I don't like tv dramas and I usually change the channel or run around the room. I am more of a Sci-Fi girl myself. On the odd day I'll watch a drama like House (which is losing my interest). On the subject of House, the creator David Shore had said in some interview that he based the character House off of Sherlock Holmes. That character drew me into watching the show itself. Soon the drama House had (cough cough Season 7) turned me away, and lost interest.
Now the format of Sherlock is quite different from anything I have ever watched. Each season contains 3 episodes of 90 minute episodes. It's like a series of movies, and for three weeks viewers are treated a movie trilogy. I was quite shocked when I found out that each season consisted of 3 episodes per season. I had thought there was an error, but no it wasn't. Also found out that a new season comes out like every 2 years. Meaning I have to wait till 2013 for new episodes and how Sherlock faked his death (sorry for spoiling it if you haven't seen it).
I really like how they have modernized Sherlock Holmes. Within the first 20 minutes, they introduce an technological Holmes as he texts everyone in the press conference, "Wrong". Later in the episode, he says, "I like to text". Holmes doesn't smoke a pipe anymore, but uses nicotine patches instead. John Watson now writes a blog rather than a journal. Good job Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss (who happens to play Mycroft Holmes). There is also a level of humor that is quite pleasant. It's also nice to see them poke fun at the old day Sherlock Holmes with the hat.
Although while watching the show, I found myself making relations to the Sherlock Holmes movie directed by Guy Richie. There was some similarities, but mainly with the second movie Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows. Like the line, "If convenient, come right away. If inconvenient, come away". Not to mention both Holmes in their respective media, faked their death. I don't think they mean to be similar, it just happened. Each though have their own strengths.
A few months ago, CBS announced they're making their own Sherlock Holmes show named, "Elementary". Sometimes re-making a BBC shows isn't always a good idea (with the exception of Being Human). In addition to making Watson a female (they've cast Lucy Liu as Joan Watson). Let's see what happens.
