Supernatural "King of the Damned": Dean's Arc Picks Up

At this point in the season I think it is safe to say there will be no more fillers as we are now in the final three episodes where usually in Supernatural all things go to hell. Well it should be at least now anyways. King of the Damned felt like the start of the final arc rather than things beginning to fall apart. We saw the beginning of Dean's decent with the mark of Cain, and Castiel's army coming toward to take on Metatron and the start of the possible angel war. In a way this mirror's season 6's final arc in a way which Castiel gathering his following that splits the heavens into two angel factions and a character's descent into dangerous territory. Not to mention killing off one of it's big bads early on in the season. At least Supernatural is not wasting time as it lines itself up for hell breaking loose in it's final two episodes. I just feel that now that we are in the final 3 episodes of the season, that King of the Damned should feel like it.

King of the Damned started off with a time jump as Abbadon went back in time to grab Crowley's son as a bargaining chip. You all may remember Gavin from season 6, when he appeared as a ghost. Elsewhere and back in the present, angels are hanging out in a bar, when one of Metatron's followers comes bragging about Metatron and the secret entrance to heaven. When he leaves the bar, Castiel's men grab him and bring him in for interrogation. When he is getting no answers, he calls in the Winchesters to help with the interrogation. Thus the connection with last week's episode and the phone call from Cas. The Winchesters are not fond of helping Cas with his angel war, but Dean is willing to help with the torture which concerns Sam. When Dean almost eagerly cuts the angel, Sam stops Dean and then realizes they can manipulate the angel by pretending not to believe him. In a hotel, Crowley calls a meeting with his council only to find out that they have turned him into Abbadon. Abbadon makes a deal with Crowley to turn the Winchesters and the first blade in exchange for his son. With his new human side, Crowley makes the call and leads the Winchesters towards Abbadon.

I am really thankful that Supernatural filler period is over now and King of the Damned beginning the start of our journey to ultimate feels at the end of the season. You know it's a good finale for Supernatural if you end up emotionally damaged at one point right? I like it when Supernatural gets back on track. King of the Damned in a way felt more political this week as both Demons and Angels were dealing with their waring factions within their borders. The whole season when it wasn't on fillers, was about getting either Abbadon or Metatron who are both fighting their own wars. Abbadon wants to be the queen of hell while Crowley just wants his title back. Metatron wants to build a better heaven and a good story while Castiel just wants to open the heavens again. Which in a way allows him to reach out to Gadreel. There was some funny moments though when the Winchesters got smart and tricked the angel into giving them all the information they wanted. The moment of the hour though has to be Dean's arc with the mark of Cain. we all have been predicting that Dean would be changing due to the effects of the mark of Cain and we are seeing a more darker Dean. This is a Dean who is willing to torture someone, no questions asked for information. Considering how Dean had a hard time with it back in season 4, this is a definite change. The question is now, how will Sam stop/save Dean from himself?

Now I really feel that King of the Damned should have been a little more epic in a way fitting for one of the final three episodes. I mean around this time of year in season 8, I was loving the episode, and now I'm like "meh". Season 9 has been a rough ride guys and I expect a lot from Supernatural at this point. I can't help but compare it to season 6 though at this point due to the arcs being very similar in a way as I mentioned above. Castiel is following a similar path to back when he was waring against Raphael, although he didn't team up with a demon this time. As like season 6 they killed off SPOILER a bit too early. Have I mentioned how awful the CGI was in the scene? I get there was a meaning behind it and all but it was so obvious that it couldn't be overlooked. As for Crowley's son, there has to be some continuity issues there with bringing him to the present. I mean, what does this mean for Weekend At Bobby's? Supernatural really needs to pick up it's game when I'm more looking forward to Arrow's next episode (which by the way is completely awesome).

So King of the Damned was interesting in the Dean's arc sense. I want to see how Dean goes to the dark side. It has been touched on in the past, but seeing it through Sam's eye, who is like the audience's eyes at this point, would be interesting. That is the real storyline of the finale. Also, Gadreel could possibly have a redemption arc too. Not that I care since he killed Kevin. In other news, the Supernatural spin off is not gonna happen since the CW has passed over it. We can all take a sign of relief since we dodged that bullet. See you next week.

How do you think Dean's arc will pan out? Did you want more emotional trauma from King of the Damned?
