Supernatural "Meta Fiction": Facing Our Demons

Well that was an interesting episode of Supernatural. After yet another hiatus, (this season seems to be plagued with them) Supernatural comes into it's final stretch with Meta Fiction. Unfortunately my cable provider decided to have technical difficulties about 7 minutes in and I was forced to catch the episode later on (thank you internet). I mean there is real no way I am going to miss Supernatural intentionally. Meta Fiction really was a testament of the characters and the challenges they have faced this season. Castiel with his growing followers deals with trying to not put himself in a position of leadership to avoid the mistakes of season 6. Sam and Dean deal with Gadreel who has been nothing but trouble. Then there is Metatron who is obviously off his rocker. Meta Fiction doesn't try any gimmicks (ie Dean as a cafeteria worker) to work the episode but rather the inner workings of relationships and politics. Also add in a surprise cameo that is most welcomed and you are in for treat.

You know how those history special begin with a man sitting in a room talking to the audience? Meta Fiction starts off with Metatron telling the audience about his story and the usual title card is replaced with a "Metatron" one. Well doesn't someone love himself. Castiel goes to investigate a angel like sound only to find bodies of his fallen brethren at the site. Cas finds one survivor who tells Cas how Gadreel offered the angels a chance back to heaven if they sided with Metatron. Some did and other didn't. So Castiel takes a photo of the symbol (which I thought was pretty interesting for his character) and sends it to Sam and Dean. They figure out that Gadreel is following a path and there is two destinations. So the Winchesters take one and Castiel takes the other. Before Castiel can leave the room though, he is greeted by a familiar face. This familiar face being the deceased Gabriel, who is ready to take on Metatron. Meanwhile Sam and Dean arrive in the other town to discover Gadreel readying another symbol to call out the angels. So they trap him and decide to get answers on what Metatron is up to.

Meta Fiction was the beginning of the final arc of the season as it set our heroes up for the end game. Despite that not much ground was covered this week or a case solved, we got to see into what drives our characters at this point. Metatron wants to be in his own right a god and create this perfect story and heaven to live in. I mean at the beginning it all started out as him wanting angels to understand humans and live out life. But it eventually shifted to creating a heaven of his own design. Now Metatron is a bit high on his power and wants to write this perfect story that results in him coming out the victor. This is similar to Castiel's rise and fall in season 6-7 with him trying to show heaven his way was correct and eventually became a "god". Castiel is facing a similar problem this season as angels are flocking to him for guidance. Heck even Metatron has told Cas that he wants Castiel to get a following to fight against him (and lose). Then there is the Winchesters who have issues as usual. Dean is still dealing with the effects of the mark while Sam is dealing with the anger he has towards Gadreel. Heck even Gadreel is beginning to doubt Metatron, or at least I think so. What was really nice about Meta Fiction was the return of Gabriel aka the Trickster. Fans have been gearing to get him back on Supernatural since season 5. The Trickster reminded us how much fun he is and how he has been missed. I'm pretty sure that "Bitch Please" line is gonna be gif-ed many times.

Meta Fiction does bring up some concerns for me. Luckily its not a lot. As I mentioned above Meta Fiction didn't cover much ground as it was in the bunker, a motel room and a warehouse. It was more character driven then case driven. Also sucks that Gabriel is still dead. Not sure about Metatron putting all those books and movies into Castiel's head was a good thing. Sure he gets the reference, but that it. Doesn't it take some of the fun out of the character now that he knows what the Death Star is? Also not liking where Castiel's character is heading. I just really hope its like a double cross or something. In a way, Meta Fiction was also a bit of a disappointment. The promos sold the episode as a funny one, a parody, but it wasn't.

With Supernatural coming into it's home stretch of season 9, Meta Fiction set up it's characters for their final arc. Dean on his way to kill Abbadon and maybe, possibly losing himself. Sam with a vendetta for Gadreel, but now has to watch out for Dean. Castiel possibly treading the season 6 path again. Gadreel beginning to question Metatron. Metatron high on his own power and story. At least we will always have Dean's shower scene (for you Dean fans. Gif away) and Gabriel. Hopefully now hiatus season is over for good and Supernatural can just air the rest of the season.

What do you think Castiel is planning? Do you think Gadreel will betray Metatron?
