Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Might Not Be Ground Breaking, But Fun All The Same

With the Harry Potter and Twilight era now gone, it leaves a void for another series to step in and shine, or be compared against the above. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters picks up with our heroes at Camp Half Blood to give us another brand of heroes.I have to admit that Percy Jackson is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me as I enjoy watching the films. Also happen to be a sucker for myths and powers, which Percy Jackson brings to the big screen. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters was really no ground breaking film, but rather a movie you can sit down with your family and enjoy. Or enjoy with your friends. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters delivers the audience a good, simple story with action and humor mixed in. Not to mention some cool guest stars (cough cough Nathan Fillion and Anthony Head). Watch as Percy and his friends take on another quest.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters begins with the creation of the barrier around the camp to protect the demi gods. The scene moves to present day with Percy (Logan Lerman) participating in a contest (cue Fall Out Boy) with the other demi-gods, when he is about to when he throws it to save someone, resulting in his loss. Percy begins to feel that he is turning into a one quest wonder and has a one sided conversation with his father about it. This is when Tyson (Douglas Smith), half cyclops, half son of Poseidon, shows up. Percy is shocked to hear he has a half brother and just when Percy is wrapping his head around it, a creature breaks through the barrier and attacked the camp. Percy is able to stop it, but the camp realizes it is in danger with the weakening barrier. So a quest to set to retrieve the golden fleece, but it is given to the daughter of Ares, Clarisse (Leven Rambin). Percy is worried about Luke's involvement though, so he, Grover (Brandon T. Jackson), Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), and Tyson set out on the quest as well.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters was a surprise to hear about since I thought they were never going to make a sequel to the first film. It was a pleasant surprise. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is a simple adventure with the theme of discovering yourself. A message that tells the audience to believe in yourself and you can do anything. Percy Jackson is a likeable hero though and make you want to cheer for him, and I guess this is credit to Logan Lerman for bringing this into the character. Other than Percy, another reason I watch Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is mostly because all the Greek mythology mixed in, which I have loved since I was a child. Which is another drawing factor to this film. Let's not forget the humor that Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters used in the film. The main sources were obviously Tyson and Grover whose personalities tend to get them into trouble or strange situations. Like Grover dressing as a woman so he wouldn't get eaten. Now I want to talk about the CGI. It was nicely done as some of the visual were just amazing. I could go even as far to say that it might be worth to see in 3D. I love water effects of Percy controlling the water. Finally, some awesome guest stars! Jake Abel is back (no Adam is not SPN fans) as Luke, hell bent on destroying the world. There also Nathan Fillion, who makes an appearance as Hermes.

So what about Percy Jackson: Sea of Monster made it not such a stellar movie? First there is the obvious label of "tween" movie which people don't like or need to be aware of. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is targeted towards the young teenage audience, and for the more mature audience, you might not enjoy it as much. Like some of the humor is young people humor. So jokes like Tyson thinking he is in Olympus when he is actually in Washington might make you face palm instead of giggling. Actually I think that scene makes anyone face palm. As for the plot of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, it was very simple point A to point B kind of movie. At least they were smart and didn't make the movie too long to do it.

Personally, I like Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters as it a good way to kill time and be entertained. Movies don't always have to be brain-less or have a really complicated plot to be enjoyable. There is nothing wrong with having a simple plot and letting your characters follow it. Although it might be nice for some character development for other than the main character that was a bit more than just believing in himself. It might be a tween movie, but at least it isn't Twilight. Thank god that sega is over. Our rating for Percy Jackson: Sea of Monster is:
