Believe "Beginner's Luck": The Bond Begins

So it looks like I'm going to be sticking around with Believe for a bit as I really have high hopes for the show. Last week, I was concerned about the play by play situation the Pilot was, and now that I have seen Beginner's Luck, it was like the good guys story verses this week's plot. Beginner's Luck gave us more information on Roman Skouras and his organization and why they are hunting Bo. Ie, the bad guys backstory in addition to learning a bit more about Winter and his team. Although I do have to admit I am worried about this whole idea of going to safe house to safe house, but I'll get into that later. What really was the strong point of Beginner's Luck was the growth of Tate and Bo's bond, and the difference between then and now. The idea that Bo is growing on Tate and Tate is finding the good inside himself again. That is Believe's true strength, Tate and Bo's bond.

The beginning of Beginner's Luck was a bit like an explanation of what was exactly happening. To be honest I can't remember of what happened, but I do know the gist of it. Nothing a little sum up can't fix no? Well Beginner's Luck picks up with Tate and Bo on the same bus they were last week when the bus is pulled over by the cops looking for Tate, or rather William Tate. Well that is one mystery solved. Tate's first name is William, but we'll all ignore that and call him Tate. Sounds more badass anyways. Tate and Bo manage to dodge the police as Bo uses her abilities to distract the police and the apparently the bus was ok to leave the officers behind. Upon arrival, Tate takes Bo to a bathroom to rest and get a haircut. Well that solves another mystery of what happened to his hair. Elsewhere, Roman begins his plan to get Bo back intact and brings in the FBI who are hunting for Tate for help on the case. In addition to hiring outside the legal system to bring Bo back. Back with Bo and Tate, they have to figure out how to earn some money so they can eat while dodging the police and later an amber alert.

Beginner's Luck had some elements to it that kept it alive and interesting. Yes, Believe has been the best it could be but there is something about it that keeps you hoping for improvement and sticking around. Beginner's Luck started the bond between Tate and Bo that could define the series later on. In the beginning we see Tate stuck with a kid he doesn't want to be stuck with while being hunted by the police. He doesn't want to get close with Bo and tries to distance himself. Bo doesn't have a choice but to stick with Tate, but wants someone to talk to and bond with. Thats what kids do right? Children need a role model, someone to look up to and have fun with. Beginner's Luck works on Tate's acceptance of Bo and how this situation isn't her fault. Like the good in his heart remembered it was there. It was interesting to learn about Roman's organization and how it "helps" children like Bo. Not to mention how Roman really believes hes helping the children. Either that or he is using them to give himself or his army superpowers. Believe finally told us a bit about Winter and his gang, and how they used to work in Roman's organization. Thats about it though. At least Believe didn't cop out on the man hunt for Tate and had the police hindering our heroes every move. Don't pull a Supernatural and have the FBI look the other way.

Now we can agree that Believe has a long way to go before it can prefect it's formula for a good hour of television. The beginning of Beginner's Luck felt sluggish as it muddied its way to explaining who Roman was since they couldn't touch much on that in the Pilot. It told us Roman was collecting special children and "helping" them. Don't get me started on the special effects when one of the children (can I call him that?) demonstrated his ability. It just seemed really silly. Unless it was on purpose to show the difference between Bo and the other children. Now Tate, much as I love your wise cracking and baby face, you can be a bit stupid sometimes. Please note that if you are on the run from the police, don't pose for a selfie with some random chick. Especially if you have the FBI on your trail.

At this point I am waiting for Believe to either blow my expectations, to continue struggling, or just get too ridiculous to watch anymore. Beginner's Luck has a foot in the right direction in some areas. Getting the FBI involved was a great move and making the idea of Tate being caught, real. The amber alert even created less places for Bo and Tate to hide. As for Roman and his little group, I think they all are drinking a little too much kool aid. Looking forward to seeing how Tate and Bo bond and when exactly they will find out that they are family. Come on Believe, you can do this.

What do you think of Tate's new hair cut? What do you think Roman's real plan is?
