Supernatural "The Purge": Fat Eating Monsters Seriously?

So, I'm not sure where Supernatural was at this week. Sure The Purge seemed like a fun idea at first and then it just turned into something I don't know how to explain. The whole idea of a fat sucking monster is a bit silly, and something the writers just worked in to make a story that got Dean in a hairnet and Sam in workout clothes. Although I have to give it that at moments, it was down right creepy. Underneath all that fat (see what I did there), The Purge was about Sam and Dean working out their trust issues with each other. I mean Dean is still clearly ticked about Sam saying they can work together but they can't be brothers. Cause Sam trust Dean after the whole angel thing and such. So Dean is a little bitter about this since, as we know, brotherly love is strong with the Winchesters. Well with Dean anyways. Other than that, The Purge was a strange one.

The Purge began at a hot dog eating contest where one man cheated and won. About to go home and sitting in his car, the man is suddenly attacked and all the fat is drained from his body killing him. In the cave, Sam finds Dean, who has been up all night looking for the usual big bads, and they look at their next case. They arrive in town and begin their investigation, starting at the sheriff's office and moving to the man's eating contest rival. There they find a something that looks like a hex bag, but not, made by the rival's wife. Sam and Dean eventually figure out that it's not a curse but rather a blessing and there was an affair afoot. I'm just paraphrasing here, cause it was all was pretty much what happened in a nut shell. Another murder happens, and Sam and Dean begin noticing strange marks on the victims and some other people. This leads them to a weight loss resort that has some surprising results. Sam goes undercover as a yoga instructor and Dean a lunch man, or something like that. After a pudding accident, their suspicions are confirmed that something is going on there.

If I have to say one good thing about The Purge is that did bring the trouble between the brothers up. It is good once and a while to face some issues that the Winchesters tend to overlook. More specifically what the brothers do to save each other. Not to mention ignoring consequences of their actions. This season in question has been Dean and his decision to put an angel inside Sam in order to save Sam despite Sam's willingness to die. We have seen Dean's tendency to act first, ask later, not to mention his need for his little brother to work with him. This was touched on back in season 8 when Dean returned from Purgatory. The Purge had Sam bring this up to Dean about making decisions for him on Sam's behalf, and how that is not right. Hopefully, we'll see later this season where it takes Sam and Dean from here. On a more happier note, Pudding people, Pudding. I'm pretty sure that was a little nod towards a certain episode back in season 5.  On the creep side, the whole last 10 minutes of hunting the creature down was creepy and the kills were too. There is just something about all the fat sucked out of a body that is just disgusting.

Now I think we all can agree The Purge was not one of season fine's best episodes so far as it wasn't very funny nor compelling. The brother issues I had mentioned above were like a side story or note to the whole fat sucking monster ("fish taco?" lol Dean) story. I suspect the whole purpose of The Purge was to get Sam into sleeveless shirts and Dean into a hairnet. Although I do have to admit that it was amusing to see. Now my main problem, fat sucking monsters, and how silly they seem. The moment fans heard about The Purge, many SuperWhoLock fans minds went to that Doctor Who episode in season 4 with the fat creatures (whose name escapes me), which meant a not so serious episode. I guess The Purge struggled with the serious and not so serious elements of the plot.

Despite The Purge's uneven pacing and possible borish plot, it did bring up some important issues between the brothers. This is an issue that we the fans have been pointing out for a long time and now the Winchesters will have to deal with this on screen. Let's not forget the gray area we walked in with this monster of the week formula. It was interesting to see the boys get out of their usual plaid shirts and suits into something different. The Purge wasn't terrible though, just for me it was a bit dull, but at least issues were brought up and such. Although, Sam, that was just mean. Supernatural is now on hiatus until after the Olympics until February 25, 2014. As well as most of my other shows. Where are all my television shows going? See you guys later after hiatus.

What did you think of The Purge? Do you think the Winchesters will work out their issues?
