'This Is The End' Is Some Meta-Maddness

This Is The End is exactly what you expect it to be and more as Rogen and friends don alter egos and survive the apocalypse. Meaning you can expect some adult humor along with random events that incite fits of laughter. Although warning for those of you who are not fond of crude humor followed by penis, drugs, and sex references, this is not the movie for you. Go watch The Internship for some safe fun. With This Is The End I had more fun watching it then I had expected, which was nice. I knew going in what kind of movie it would be and went along for the ride. It was a real treat watching the celebrities poke fun at their own lives a bit and the public's perception of them. Talk about some meta-maddness.

So This Is The End began with Seth Rogan picking up his friend Jay Baruche from the airport in LA to stay with him. Seth takes Jay back to his place where they hang and do drugs and play video games. Later in the evening, Seth suggests that they go to James Franco's house for Franco's house warming party. Jay is reluctant, but agrees and they head to Franco's place. They arrive at the party where they run into Jonah Hill and Craig Robinson among other celebrities. Jay feels out of place and decides to head out to get some more smokes with Seth. At the store things turn weird when a sudden earthquake occurs and blue lights begin sucking people up in the sky. Jay and Seth run back to Franco's house where moments after the events repeat themselves, and people begin dying. So Jay, Seth, James, Craig, and Jonah barricade themselves inside Franco's house in order to protect themselves. With a later addition of Danny McBride, the gang soon found themselves living in through the Apocalypse together in order to survive.

With all the crude humor and such, This Is The End was still a real treat to enjoy. It was like a cross between Scary Movie and Cloverfield (reality television like) that was fantastic. We as the audience enjoyed watching the actors poke fun at their selves and the stereotypes that followed. Rogen and friends were clearly having as much fun making the movie as we were watching it. The jokes don't stop flowing and the pace of the film is not harmed in an way by the direction This Is The End takes. Not to mention it makes sense somehow. The ending of This Is The End though is what I really want to point out because of how just prefect it was and how it really stayed in your mind. You'll know it when you see it, and laugh you ass off while it happens. I had tears in my eye from how hard I was laughing. That and all the awesome cameos throughout the movie. To drop some names there was Rihanna, Michael Cera, Emma Watson, and more. On a more serious note, the special effects for This Is The End were quite good, which was something I was not expecting a comedy to have. This was clearly no low budget movie and got it 'A' game on. Some of the shots were excellent too.

Now we have to talk about what was not partially great about This Is The End. First and foremost, this was not your grandma's movie (unless shes into that stuff) as it really dishes out the drug, penis, and sexual jokes that would make some people uncomfortable. I cannot stress enough you have to know that this will be a crude movie going in or your going to be in for a pleasant surprise. For someone like me, who isn't really into all these kinds of jokes, I was able to sit through it and enjoy it but there were some moments where I did cringe a little at what they did. I also felt that This Is The End was a bit long in a way as I felt it could have been a bit shorter than it was. It was like This Is The End was trying to stuff much as it could into the time frame it had. The beginning itself felt a bit slow, but that can be credited to the fact that it was building up to the main even of the apocalypse. As for the time frame of the film, it was a bit jumpy and there really was no sense of time.

This Is The End was really fun movie to watch as we got to see the actors poke fun at themselves and things go out of control. Is it a bit bad though that I was wishing throughout the movie that Jay Baruchel would survive the whole time? I'm fan of Baruchel myself, which was another reason why I paid money to see This Is The End, and I don't regret it. Not one bit. If you are looking for a good comedy this summer, and you're over the age 18, This Is The End is the movie for you. You'll laugh, and have tears in your eyes by the end of the movie.
