Snow White and the Huntsman Takes a Darker Turn

Kristen Steward and Chris Hemsworth in Snow White and the Huntsman.
Before I get down to to, I would like to bring forward the fact that my review might slightly altered due to the fact that I, myself, am not a fan of Kristen Steward and her Twilight franchise. Now thats been said, lets get down to business.

Snow White and the Huntman was one of the two versions of Snow White that was released this year. This version took the beloved character of Snow White down a darker path. It took the elements that made Snow White and twisted them to fit the plot and theme that movies developed. This caused the movie to spend a little too much time on developing how bad the queen was.

In the beginning of the story it began with Snow White's birth and childhood. Everything changed when her mother died and her father had "saved" a beautiful maiden from a mysterious black army. Too bad she was an immortal man hater, and she married the king and killed him.  She soon became the evil queen and imprisoned Snow White. Years later we find Snow White locked in a tower and the Queen hears of a way to became immortal forever; get Snow White's heart. Snow manages to escape with a nail she just noticed, and heads into the forest to hide. In order to get Snow White, the Queen hires the Huntsman (Hemsworth). The Huntsman does find Snow, but surprise, he was tricked by the Queen, and Snow asks him to help her get to the Duke. Together the two head off to the Duke's keep.

The liberties they took in the movie were interesting I must say, although sometimes they were misused. I found the beginning part of the movie very slow, but it picked up near the middle. I also found the means of Snow White's escape a bit random, like finding a horse just randomly waiting for her. There are a number of excuses of why these things happened, but I think it should have been better explained in the beginning. As for Kristen Steward, it was like they intentionally didn't give her too much lines, and she just basically ran around whimpering throughout the movie. They also decided to create a love triangle between Snow White, the Huntsman and William. Kristen Steward in a love triangle? Who would thought.

Snow White and the Huntsman did have its good points as well. It created this wonderful environment and clash between good and evil. This was shown with the dark forest and the sanctuary with all the mystical creatures within. Which included a creature that looked a lot like the deer thing from the animated movie Princess Mononoke. Chris Hemsworth did a good job as well with the material he was given, and he showed his experience in combat scenes due to his previous role in Thor. Charlize Theron was great as the evil Queen Ravenna as she practically oozed off the evil vibe.

Snow White and the Huntsman was not as terrible of a movie as I thought it would be. Although it is not great by any means. Snow White and the Huntsman shouldn't have been as long, and would have done well shorter. I found myself wondering, "is it done yet?" a fair bit. The ending of the movie was decent and I love the fact they didn't drag out the relationships too much and turn it into another love triangle Twilight movie. My advise for this movie is to give it a shot, or wait for it to come on dvd. If you choose not to watch it, your not missing too much. Although missing performances by Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth. Check out the trailer below.
